Published Works

In Print

This archive preserves the unpublished side of a working scholar — the sermons, lectures, and papers Frank Carver wrote for classroom and congregation. The works below are the other side: the ones that reached the printed page.

Books

  1. The Cross and the Spirit: Peter and the Way of the Holy

    1973 · 2nd ed. 1987 · Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City

Carver's first book, a study of the apostle Peter — first published in 1973 as Peter the Rock-Man and revised as The Cross and the Spirit. It traces Peter's transformation as the pattern of the holy life: the way of the cross and the work of the Spirit belong together.

  2. When Jesus Said Goodbye: John's Witness to the Holy Spirit

1996 · Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City

Published the year he retired from Point Loma, this study of the Farewell Discourse (John 13–17) asks what Jesus' departure meant for the coming of the Paraclete — John's witness to the Holy Spirit as the continuing presence of Jesus with his people.

  3. Pursuing the Call

    2001 · Point Loma Press

Written with Margaret Stevenson after his retirement, on the pursuit of the ministerial call.

Commentaries

  1. II Corinthians — Beacon Bible Commentary, Volume VIII

1968 · Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City

Carver's first full-length commentary on 2 Corinthians, written for the Beacon Bible Commentary and later published in Spanish (1984). Forty years on, he would return to the same letter for the New Beacon series.

  2. 2 Corinthians: A Commentary in the Wesleyan Tradition

2009 · Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City (New Beacon Bible Commentary)

Written in his eighties, Carver's second commentary on 2 Corinthians distills a lifetime with Paul's most personal letter — ministry out of weakness, the treasure in clay jars, strength made perfect. He also served as section editor for the New Beacon volumes on 1 & 2 Peter, Jude, the letters of John, and James.

Edited & Translation Work

  1. New American Standard Bible — Translation Team

1961 onward · The Lockman Foundation

Carver served on the Lockman Foundation's editorial board from 1961 and on the translation team for the New American Standard Bible — the work his son points to first. He later wrote the 1 and 2 Corinthians notes for a planned NASB Study Bible that was never completed.
